Lieder ohne Worte, op. 19b, nr. 2

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809–1847)
Lieder ohne Worte, op. 19b, nr. 2
11 December 1830
Manuscript

Mendelssohn published thirty-six pieces under the collective title Lieder ohne Worte (Songs without Words) between 1832 and 1845. This presentation copy of the manuscript of one of the earliest, published as opus 19, no. 2, is dated 11 December 1830 (the piece can be heard at the listening station nearby). It differs considerably from the version published in 1832, and includes a contrasting faster section in A major that was omitted from the published score.

This manuscript was written during an extended stay in Rome, where Mendelssohn spent much time in the company of artists, sketching the city’s picturesque landmarks. It later belonged to the virtuoso pianist Vladimir Horowitz.
