George Romney (1734–1802)
Portrait of a Man with a Violin and Cello
ca. 1758–60
Oil on canvas
Romney was a violinist as well as a painter, and this unidentified sitter may have been a fellow amateur with whom he played. The portrait dates from early in Romney’s career, when he was a provincial painter working in his native Lancashire.
