The sixteen American collectors’ cards shown here indicate the great popularity of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas in the United States. Advertisers were quick to associate themselves with the stars of the touring stage productions. The elaborate costumes of The Mikado seem to have appealed to advertisers in the clothing industry and makers of thread.
